Idaho ranks last in child immunizations

BOISE - Despite Governor Dirk Kempthorne's best efforts under his "Generation of the Child" approach, Idaho still ranks last in the nation for proper immunization of children.

Only 69 percent of Idaho's children are immunized. The national average is 78 percent, according to a report on "Growing Up Poor in Idaho" from Idaho Kids Count.

The report on the impacts of poverty on health and child development also said Idaho ranked 44th nationally last year in the number of mothers who received prenatal care, putting their children at risk of being born prematurely or underweight.

The report suggests one way to help the young is to increase spending for Idaho's Childrens Health Insurance Program. It's an extension of Medicaid coverage for children of working poor families who otherwise don't qualify for benefits.
